Buni pardons 115 prisoners

By Bala Dauda, Damaturu
Gov Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has pardoned 115 prisoners selected from various correctional centres across the state.
Buni stated this in Damaturu while receiving the report of a Committee on Prerogative of Mercy chaired by his Senior Special Assistant on Legal Matters, Mr Saleh Samanja.
He noted that the report was critical to his administration’s efforts at decongesting correctional centres in the state.
The governor said his administration would continue to initiate measures that would facilitate inmates’ rehabilitation, urging wealthy individuals to assist in paying minor fines of inmates.

Buni advised the freed inmates to be of good conduct and stay out of trouble.
He commended the committee for their efforts, which led to the successful identification and freeing of the inmates.
In his remarks, Samanja said the pardon followed rigorous scrutiny and was in line with Section 212 of the 1999 constitution as amended.
He said all the freed inmates were happy with the governor’s benevolence, assuring him that they would correct their past mistakes.
