Correctional Visit: Kebbi CJ Pardons 8, Admits 8 on Bail, Convicts Others

In continuation of Kebbi State acting chief Judge, Honourable Justice Umar Abubakar visits to all the correctional facilities in the state, today he has visited Yauri, Bagudo and Kamba correctional centres.

The propose of the visit is to interact with the inmates and awaiting trial as well to review their cases and where possible to discharge, release on bail and also to convict and sentence those with minor offences, More so to consider those with health challenges as part of his constitutional mandate as the acting chief Judge of the said State.

In Yauri correctional facility, Seven persons was pardoned, four persons granted bail while their cases continue and to be heard and determines within the periods of three months. Also two persons was convicted and sentence to twelve stroke of cane having confessed of stealing mobile handsets and it was recovered and returned to the right owners.

However, in Bagudo one inmate was pardoned because he has only one week to complete his jail sentence, Three persons was convicted and sentence to twenty one stroke of cane having confessed stealing one bag of Paddy Rice and mobile handsets and the properties was all recovered and returned to the right owners. However, three granted bail and their cases continues and also an order was made for speedy of their trial.

Equally, chief Judge Honourable Justice Umar Abubakar gave immediate order of one Yusuf Hassan be transferred to NDLEA for further investigation and possible Prosecution because he was arrested in possession of Indian hemp and other drugs substance and which NSCDC have no power to prosecute drugs case it is only NDLEA and it’s the jurisdiction of federal High Court to trial such case.

Similarly, he also ordered the Director public prosecution (DPP)from the Kebbi State ministry of Justice to take over the case of five young persons arrested by police for defiling a girl under 18 years in Bagudo local government under the jurisdiction of High Court to prepare charges against them and for possible trial.

The Chief Judge, After proceeded to Kamba Dandi local government correctional facility, where he admitted one on bail having brought to the facility owing his business partner Money, which an order was made that his business partner be invited to put an undertaking how he will be settling the money he is owing on monthly basis. The rest other persons whom their cases are already on trial be continued and determine within three to six months periods. Thereafter Chief Judge adjourned visit to another date which will be communicated to other agencies that form part of the chief Judge entourage.
