Court orders execution of dismissed soldier who killed Yobe cleric

A High Court of Yobe State sitting in Potiskum has sentenced Lance Cpl. John Gabriel, a dismissed soldier, to death for killing a Muslim cleric, Sheikh Goni Aisami, in Karasuwa Local Government area of the state.

Delivering his judgement on Tuesday, Justice Usman Zannah, said Gabriel was sentenced to death by hanging on two counts of murder and armed robbery.

He said the offence contravened section 1 (2) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision Act) Cap R11 LFN 2004, and Section 221 of the Penal Code law of Yobe State.

Zannah said the second accused, Lance Cpl. Adamu Gideon, Gabriel’s accomplice, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The judge said Gideon was charged with attempt to commit culpable homicide and assisting in concealing stolen Property

The accused persons testified in there defence and opted not to call further evidence.

Our correspondent reports that the prosecution had called 12 witnesses and tendered 9 exhibit during the trial.

It would be recalled that Gabriel allegedly shot and killed Aisami on August 22, after the cleric gave him a free ride to Jaji-Maji.
