May Day: Implement consequential Salary adjustment to reflect N30,000 minimum wage,NLC tells Bagudu

Nigeria Labour Congress Kebbi state Council, have called on the state governor, senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu to implement the consequential salary adjustment to reflect the N30,000 national minimum wage for all categories of workers in the state.

The called was made by the state Chairman, Comrade Murtala Usman during his speech on the this year’s May day at presidential lodge on Monday in Birnin kebbi. He said the celebration of may Day is as well as workers day “productive work for women and men in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dilgnity”, in essence, work is considered decent when: fair income is paid to workers.

He add that Employment is guaranteed and there are safe working conditions; There’s equal opportunities and treatment for all; There is social protection for workers and members of their families; There are prospects for workers to develop themselves and also if it inspires social integration; Workers are allowed freely to express their concerns and to also organize. Based on the above background we have the following demands : harmonization of the three increments of pensions which were 12%, 15.5% and 33% and implementation of 30% consequential adjustment.

Adding that, association of Nurses and midwives in the state wish to put forward their own request for consideration and possible implementation as follows: Hazard allowances for all nurses and midwives across the state. Full implementation of CONHESS, improvement on security to enable nurses and midwives personnel’s to able to discharge their statutory duties especially in the areas that are affected with insecurity challenges. However adjustment of salary for lecturers in the college of nursing sciences among other issues.

According to the chairman, he said there’s need to give consideration to regularize the acting appointments in the state service, such as the head of civil service, that of permanent Secretaries and other that have been in acting capacity for quite some time. Regularization of their appointments into substantive post will go a long way in improving the productivity in the kebbi State civil service.

NLC chairman, pointed out that the theme of the 2023 May Day which is ” Worker’s Rights and socio-economic justice” is suspicious given denial of workers’ rights in places of work and in many states across the country. It is instructive to note that denial of workers’ rights could lead to denial of deliverance socio-economic justice to them, in many places of work, basic element that are essential for attainment of decent work, which is one of the rights of workers are not provided by the employers.

On this note, on behalf of the organized labour and entire Kebbi state workers’ we implore government of the state to give total attention to all the request and give approval for immediate implementation, we thanked and appreciate governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for the payment of gratuities and among entitlement of kebbi State workers. In his own remarks, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, said ” I noted all the request represented by state labour leader, Comrade Murtala Usman, also the call for regularizing acting appointments to substantive capacity. He assured labour for possible consideration and implementation. He made a clarification on the recent approved 40% payment by the federal government to workers at the federal level, labour union should understand that it’s not increase of salary to avoid leading to any debate.

The governor, further elaborate that the approval is for consequential Salary adjustment to balanced up with the workers whom are left behind of the same scales. He also advised union leaders to start thinking of solution and how to led a debate on the issue of oil subsidy, because soon our government can’t be able to continue with paying oil subsidy because we are bankrupt by the same oil subsidy in the country.

Senator Bugudu, expressed his appreciation for the cordial relationship with all the existing union in the state, urging them to do same to incoming administration, while he said” he i paid labour union for supporting one of their own to succeed me as predecessor”, he said”.
