Niger, Burkina Faso And Mali Quit ECOWAS

The military rulers of Niger Republic Mali and Burkina Faso announced thier withdrawal of membership from Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS/ with immediate effect.

The three African Countries made this knowned in joint statement in Sunday.

In the statement, the countries expressed dissátisfaction with the organization’s activities and devíation from its founding principles and faiIure to support member states in the fíght against terrọ́rism

Reports say, the three regimes have had tense ties with ECOWAS since coups took place in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.

All three were suspended from ECOWAS with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions.

A French military withdrawal from the Sahel — the region along the Sahara desert across Africa — has heightened concerns over the conflicts spreading southward to Gulf of Guinea states Ghana, Togo, Benin and Ivory Coast.
