The Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), has donated Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) equipment to the Federal University, Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State.

FUGA Spokesman, Alhaji Adamu Saleh, in a statement in Gashua on Friday, said the equipment included projectors, monitors, printers, digitizers, GPS units and sensors.

He said the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Maimuna Waziri received the equipment from MCRP officials and handed over same to Dr. Lawrence Udeh, the Head of Geography Department.

“ Prof. Maimuna said the equipment will help enhance the capacity of the institution in monitoring the environment, studying climate change and managing natural disasters such as fire, droughts, flooding, fresh water availability and crop yields.

“ The equipment will not only help in limiting the effect of desertification and improving the livelihood and security of the region, but will also assist the university in exploring areas of research that would help in mitigating the devastating effect of flooding.

“I sincerely want to extend my profound gratitude on behalf of the Senate, management, and entire staff and students of Federal University Gashua, especially those at the Geography department, for the wonderful gesture from the MCRP team,” Saleh quoted Waziri as saying.

The spokesman said the vice chancellor charged the department to make judicious use of the equipment to enhance teaching and research.

Our correspondent reports that the MCRP is a World Bank assisted intervention project across different sectors in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
