Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to train, empower displaced persons and restore livelihoods.

He disclosed this, when the organisation visited the state.

The affected Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were attacked and sacked from their communities during over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

Lamenting the humanitarian crisis, in Damaturu, the governor, represented by his deputy, Idi Gubana, said: “The Committee has contributed a lot in addressing various humanitarian crises during our trying period of insurgency.”

He said the victims have been provided with humanitarian interventions of various kinds, including the Reconstruction, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (RRR) programme.

He said: “We were assisted by the Red Cross in resettling most of the IDPs in their respective communities. The training and empowerment of our youths should be prioritised by the Committee, to restore and sustain their means of livelihoods.”

According to him, topmost priority should be accorded to socio-economic stability and sustenance of livelihoods.

In his brief remarks, Red Cross Head of Operations, Julianne Chassamy, said: “We’re here in Damaturu to familiarise and assess full implementation of our projects in the state. We have executed many projects, especially, in Kanamma, Damaturu and Buni/Yadi to complete the resettlement of IDPs.
