Deregistering the NDC Will Undermine Democracy, Says Hamisu Dogon Nama
A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Hamisu Sa’ad Dogon Nama, has described the reported deregistration of the party as an action that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.
In a statement made available to journalists, Dogon Nama expressed concern, arguing that the removal of a legally registered political party from the country’s political landscape could weaken democratic participation, reduce political inclusiveness, and limit the choices available to voters.
He described the court’s ruling on the deregistration of the NDC as unfortunate, noting that the judiciary is the institution where every citizen is expected to obtain justice and the protection of their rights. He warned that judicial decisions on matters of such significance should strengthen, rather than weaken, public confidence in the democratic process.
According to him, democracy flourishes where political plurality, fairness, and the rule of law are upheld, adding that any action affecting political competition should strictly comply with constitutional and legal provisions. He maintained that decisions capable of limiting political participation could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
Dogon Nama also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to discharge its constitutional responsibilities fairly by giving due consideration to the grievances and complaints of all political stakeholders without infringing on anyone’s rights or showing bias.
He said ensuring justice, fairness, and equal treatment for all political parties would strengthen democratic institutions and promote a more stable, credible, and enduring democratic system in the country.
The NDC chieftain further called on members and supporters of the party across the country to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, assuring them that the party’s leadership has commenced the necessary legal process to challenge the deregistration in court.
According to him, the leadership of the party is confident that the judiciary will give all parties a fair hearing and ensure that justice prevails. He therefore urged party faithful to remain united and avoid any action capable of disrupting public peace while the legal process runs its course.
Dogon Nama reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law, maintaining that the NDC would continue to pursue all lawful avenues to protect its rights and safeguard the democratic aspirations of its members.
He also appealed to Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions and to respect the judicial process, expressing optimism that the matter would ultimately be resolved in accordance with the law.
“We urge all our members to remain calm, united, and law-abiding. The leadership of the NDC will pursue this matter through the courts, and we are confident that justice will prevail,” Dogon Nama said.
