Kano Unveils Digital Multimedia Department, Inaugurates PR Directors’ Forum to Boost Government Communication
The Kano State Government has unveiled a Digital Multimedia Department under the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs as part of efforts to strengthen government communication, improve transparency, and deepen public engagement through modern digital platforms.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, announced the development during the unveiling and inauguration ceremony held on Monday at the Ministry’s headquarters in the Audu Bako Secretariat, Kano.
Speaking at the event, Waiya described the establishment of the department as a significant institutional reform designed to bridge communication gaps between government and citizens in an increasingly digital age.
He explained that the initiative followed extensive consultations and institutional assessments, which identified the need for a dedicated structure to effectively document government programmes, showcase achievements, disseminate policies, and counter misinformation through credible and timely communication.
According to the commissioner, modern governance requires a robust digital communication infrastructure capable of ensuring that government messages remain accessible, authoritative, and responsive to public needs.
“The Digital Multimedia Department represents our response to the growing demand for modern, efficient, and professional government communication. It will ensure that the voice of government remains visible, accessible, and authoritative across all communication platforms,” he said.
Waiya noted that the department would serve as a central hub for content creation, digital engagement, documentation of government activities, online publishing, and strategic media management.
He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving the creation of the department, describing the decision as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to responsive governance and effective public communication under the Kano First Agenda.
The event also featured the formal inauguration of the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers, comprising communication professionals from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the state.
According to the commissioner, the forum was established to promote coordination, professional collaboration, information sharing, and strategic alignment among public communication officers in Kano State.
To support the activities of the newly inaugurated forum, Waiya announced a donation of ₦1 million, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening institutional communication and public enlightenment efforts.
In their goodwill messages, communication experts and media stakeholders, including Professor Nura Ibrahim, Associate Professor Hassan Alhaji Ya’u, Dr. Saminu Umar Rigiyar Zaki of the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, Chairman of the Heads of Media Organizations Forum Ado Sa’idu Warawa, and Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mustapha Gambo, commended the Kano State Government for the initiative.
They noted that the establishment of the Digital Multimedia Department would significantly enhance the state’s digital communication strategy, improve information dissemination, and strengthen engagement between government and the public.
The stakeholders described the initiative as a timely response to the evolving communication landscape and a major step toward modernizing government-public relations in Kano State.
