The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been nominated for the Award of Excellence in Security Governance by the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies (ISSS), Abuja, in recognition of his administration’s outstanding performance in peace, security, and social stability in the state.
The nomination letter was received by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, on behalf of the Governor which was presented by a delegation from the Institute led by its Director, Dr. Henry Nwokoji.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Nwokoji disclosed that the nomination followed a comprehensive research and assessment conducted by the Institute across the seven North-West states. He said the findings showed that Kano State ranked highest in security resilience, policy implementation, and institutional response to security challenges.
This was contained in statement issued to newsmen by Sani Abba Yola, Director Special Duties of the Ministry on Tuesday.
According to him, the research revealed that Kano State has distinguished itself in managing insecurity through effective leadership, strong political will, and strategic interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of crime and social unrest.
The Director particularly commended the Safe Corridor Initiative introduced by Governor Yusuf, describing it as a unique deradicalization and rehabilitation programme designed to prevent youths involved in drug abuse and other social vices from drifting into banditry, kidnapping, and violent extremism.
Receiving the nomination letter, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs expressed gratitude to the Institute for recognizing the efforts of Governor Yusuf in promoting peace and security. He noted that the recognition was a reflection of the Governor’s deliberate commitment to supporting the security sector.
Comrade Waiya highlighted several initiatives introduced by the administration, including the establishment of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps, which has recruited and trained over 2,000 young men and women who have been absorbed into the state civil service and deployed across the 44 Local Government Areas.
He explained that the state government has provided operational vehicles, motorcycles, uniforms, and office facilities to the corps with a view to enhancing community-based security operations and support conventional security agencies.
The Commissioner also revealed that the administration established the Anti-Phone Snatching Squad to strengthen efforts toward combating crime and maintaining public safety across the state.
On the Safe Corridor Initiative, Comrade Waiya disclosed that more than 3,000 youths had voluntarily embraced the programme, while Governor Yusuf has approved over 400,000.00 million for its implementation, adding that the first phase of the programme would involve the rehabilitation of 1,000 youths through a 40-day camping in collaboration with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
He further stated that beneficiaries of the programme would be supported with educational and vocational opportunities to facilitate their reintegration into the society, thereby reducing crime and promoting sustainable peace.
The Commissioner attributed the relative peace and stability enjoyed in Kano State to the Governor’s inclusive style of governance, strong collaboration with security agencies, and the support of the people. He assured the delegation that the nomination letter and accompanying research report would be formally presented to Governor Yusuf, while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
