The decision by the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to constitute the Kano State Drug Control Committee is a commendable and timely response to the growing challenge of substance abuse. It reflects a commitment to protecting public health, strengthening communities and safeguarding the future of Kano’s youth.

Equally reassuring is the calibre of individuals appointed to serve on the committee. They are accomplished professionals and respected stakeholders with the expertise and credibility required to drive meaningful policy and practical solutions.

For me, this appointment carries special significance. I have had the privilege of advocating alongside several members of the committee for the establishment of a Kano State Drug Control Agency. We have consistently maintained that Kano needs a dedicated institution to coordinate prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, research and public enlightenment in collaboration with relevant partners.

The constitution of this committee therefore represents more than a routine appointment; it is a significant step towards institutionalising the fight against drug abuse. Encouragingly, the bill seeking to establish the Kano State Drug Control Agency is already before the Kano State House of Assembly.

I respectfully appeal to Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf to continue supporting the legislative process until the bill is passed and assented to. Doing so will transform years of advocacy into a lasting institution capable of delivering coordinated and sustainable interventions across the state.

Kano has the opportunity to set another positive example in public health and social development. With the right political will and the expertise of this committee, the establishment of the Kano State Drug Control Agency can become a defining legacy of this administration.
