Kano Government Halts Alleged Illegal Sale of Watari Bridge Land, Demolishes Unauthorized Structures

The Kano State Government has stopped the alleged illegal allocation and sale of land at the site of the old Watari Bridge, demolished unauthorized structures erected on the disputed land, and arrested individuals allegedly involved in the demolition of the bridge and unlawful development of the area.

The Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning said the government acted swiftly after receiving reports that some individuals were claiming to have obtained approval to allocate and sell plots of land at the site of the old bridge.

According to the Commissioner, the old Watari Bridge has served as a critical transportation link for more than five decades, connecting communities such as Janguza, Kabo, Karaye, and Rogo. He emphasized that the bridge remains an important public asset and warned that the government would not tolerate any attempt to convert public infrastructure into private property through illegal means.

He further disclosed that all vehicles, machinery, and equipment used in the alleged illegal operation would be confiscated, while those arrested would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Residents of the area recounted waking up to find sections of the old bridge being demolished by individuals who allegedly claimed the land had been sold to them. They further alleged that despite efforts by community members to halt the demolition, the work continued under the protection of heavily armed police officers.

The residents said they were informed that the land had been sold by the Kumbotso Local Government Council.

Describing the old bridge as a vital public facility that has served surrounding communities for decades, the residents commended the Kano State Government for its prompt intervention. They expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning for taking decisive action to protect the public asset and prayed for the continued success of the government in safeguarding public property and ensuring justice for the people.
