Sub-Committee On Engagement With Business Community Continues Voter Registration Advocacy At Yan Katako Market
As part of its ongoing grassroots mobilisation campaign, the Sub-Committee on Engagement with the Business Community of the Kano State Task Force Committee on Voter Registration Mobilisation today, 14th July 2026, visited the famous Yankato Market, Na’ibawa, where it held an interactive engagement with the market executive and sectional leaders to encourage greater participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Welcoming the delegation, the Chairman of the Market Association, Alhaji Sunusi Adamu Maidukiyay, expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for considering Yankato Market worthy of the engagement. He assured the Committee of the market’s unwavering support for the voter registration mobilisation campaign and reaffirmed the association’s continued prayers for the success of the present administration.
He further urged all traders and members of the market to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that the PVC remains the only legitimate instrument through which citizens can exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders of their choice.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of the Sub-Committee, Alhaji Tijjani Abdullahi Sarki, described the possession of a Permanent Voter Card as both a civic responsibility and a demonstration of patriotism. He explained that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise is designed to accommodate Nigerians who have attained the age of 18, those seeking correction of personal information, transfer of polling units or place of residence, as well as replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.
He called on the leadership of the market to champion the mobilisation campaign by encouraging every eligible trader, apprentice and employee to take advantage of the opportunity before the registration exercise closes.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Sub-Committee, Alhaji Hassan Kofar Mata, appreciated the market leadership and members for their warm reception and active participation. He informed the gathering that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to 26th July 2026, thereby providing additional time for eligible citizens to register or update their records.
He further explained that INEC has enhanced its online registration platform, enabling prospective registrants to commence the registration process through their mobile phones including biometric capture, making the exercise more convenient and efficient.
Responding to questions from participants, the Chairman of the Sub-Committee acknowledged an appeal made by the Public Relations Officer of the Market Association to the Kano State Government for the urgent evacuation of accumulated sawdust refuse, which has encroached on access roads within the market and is hindering the free movement of traders and visitors. He assured the market leadership that the concern would be communicated to the appropriate government authorities for necessary attention.
The Sub-Committee reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Task Force Committee on Voter Registration Mobilisation to sustaining stakeholder engagement across markets, business clusters and communities, with the goal of ensuring that every eligible citizen is registered and empowered to participate fully in the democratic process.
